All vintage fishing lures on eBay
James Heddon is acknowledged the world over as the creator of the first artificial fishing lure. Heddon lures appear to be one of the most collected fishing lure brands by lure collectors around the world. Heddon lures can range in value from $1 all the way up to a few thousand dollars for the really rare and mint condition lures. One of the reasons Heddon are appealing to collectors is that they can be dated in general periods by the hook holders (ie - cup rig, L-rig, toilet seat rig, two pieceor flap rig, and surface rig), props, gill markings, and hook styles.The legend of how Heddon got started is like most stories hard to document. The story begins in the late 1890/'s (Heddon's site show 1894) while waiting for a friend to go fishing, James Heddon whittles a lure from a piece of wood he picked up along the way. Some beleive it was a frog. He fastened hooks to this 'plug' as he waited for a fishing buddy to arrive. He tossed it into the water in a mill pond near Dowagiac, Michigan and legend has it that he caught a large bass. This marked the beginning of the first bass lure for Heddon. It the begging he only made 'plugs'/lures for friends and family members. These are 'extremely' rare and hard to authenticate. Don't expect to see one listed for sale here.
By 1902 James Heddon and his two sons - William and Charles - had decided to make a go at making lures as a business. In 1902 they were granted a patent for the Dowagiac Expert Lure. This began a business that produced some of the finest wooden fishing lures ever made almost seventy years.
